A Sappy Love Letter To Actors

Dear Actors,

Honestly, bluntly, what would I have done without you? Where would I be without the uncountable actors in my life? Seriously, just the sheer number of you is a blessing in and of it self. As an actor, I never felt alone in the world. I saw you in plays as a child, on tv always, I met you as collaborators, colleagues, students, friends, and over the years, family.  Actors have always filled my life,  and I love you for that!

Let me count the ways!
Picture
1. You are hope springing eternal!. Granted there are winters and polar vortexes when an actor goes dormant, but it doesn't stop you Actor! There is always another "Maybe I could play that...".
2. You are charming. Actors are charming, and fun to talk too. Most actors know a little about a lot of things, and are always curious to know more. Actors are fun at parties. A party of only actors can have it's draw backs, especially if more than 51% of them are Musical Theatre actors. Dramats know of what I speak. But on the whole, actors are great conversationalists and great listeners too!
3. Actors sacrifice a lot to count in that number. There are so many ways actors find to live a full life, and still give so much time, thought and resources to being ready to play. Some actors sit on the bench a long time, always ready to jump in the game. Actor's make it look easy, even glamours. And for the most part, its not.
4. Actors are so generous they give away what they do every moment. We give it away so quickly, sometimes we say the best performances are the ones you don't even remember. Every actor looks forward to having a live show or a series of takes where they are so immersed in the world of the character, they only sort of remember what has happened. We can't hang it on our wall or do a reading from it. The moment of acting happens and it is gone

As a joke, I some times ask my students to pour me a cup of acting. Clearly an absurd request. I use it to illustrate, and to remind ourselves, how elusive the heart of this craft can be. It's not something we can touch or hold. But we know it when we see it. We know it when we feel it. So here we are searching for a way to story-tell that is as old as humans and constantly moving into the foremost edges of modern technology. We are channeling a form of communication that is invisible and powerful. What does it mean to be human? Pour me a cup of tea and we can talk about it. We can use  acting as a laboratory of discovery and exploration.
